Everyone's a Critic
So I might as well be one too. Well, maybe not really a critic, but just offering some unsolicited judgments.
Top Restaurants in SF/Area, in no order whatsoever
Eric's (Chinese) in Noe Valley
Aperto (Italian) in Potrero Hill
Firefly (California) in Noe Valley
Burma SuperStar (Pan-Asian) in Richmond District
Gyros Gyros (Mediterranean) in Palo Alto
Atlas Cafe (Sandwiches) in Mission
Zapata (Burrito) in the Castro
Zachary's (Pizza) in Rockride/Berkeley
Well, that's 8 anyway. I think this is clearly my top tier. Next tier would have places like Applewood (Pizza) in Menlo Park, Goat Hill (Pizza) in Potrero Hill, Tao Cafe (Vietnamese) and Esperpento (Spanish) in Mission, Brother's (Korean) in Richmond District, Savor (Brunch) and Fattoush (Mediterranean) in Noe Valley.
I don't think any of the French bistrot places I've been to recently rise to this level, with Le Zinc in Noe Valley as the only one with a chance. As for Sushi, the only one I would have considered is one tiny little living room of a place that was in the Duboce Triangle area of the Castro but has since closed.
Some of the famous places that I've been to - Slanted Door (Vietnamese) on the Waterfront, Delfina (Italian) in Mission, Greystone (California) in St. Helena - are all fine, but just not a big deal to me. Saul's (Brunch/Sandwiches) in Berkeley does what it does exceptionally well too, but the style of food is just too heavy. Ma Tante Sumi (Fusion) in the Castro was very good too, but I've only been there once, and I can't really judge them sufficiently based on that.
Marnee (Thai) in Sunset might have once ended up on this list, but the last experience there was poor. Barney's (Burgers) in Noe Valley/Rockridge/Berkeley would have made this list at one point too, but I'm just a little tired of them.
